SAN DIEGO, Jan. 9, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Kratos Defense Security Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq:KTOS), a leading National Security Solutions provider, announced today that its RT Logic subsidiary has been awarded an initial contract valued at approximately $5 million by Lockheed Martin Information Systems Global Solutions to supply the U.S. Air Force (USAF) with the Space-based Infrared System (SBIRS) Enhanced Multi-Band Modem (SEMM). SEMM is based on RT Logic’s industry-leading Telemetrix® 400XR (T400XR) software-defined receiver and digital processing unit.

The USAF’s SBIRS satellites provide the nation with significantly improved missile warning capabilities and simultaneously support other critical missions including missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness.

RT Logic’s solution simultaneously transmits and receives data from the SBIRS satellite on multiple radio links. In addition, the SEMM provides protection against jamming through an integrated frequency hopped subsystem provided by the Secure Satcom Systems division of Astrium Limited. RT Logic’s rugged CompactPCI® (cPCI) hardware and flexible Telemetrix software-defined architecture ensures the modem will support not only current requirements but also future upgrades and enhancements.

John Monahan, President of RT Logic, stated, “The SEMM leverages RT Logic’s decade-long support of the SBIRS ground system combined with advances in our T400XR product line and our partnership with Astrium to provide an unmatched modem solution. We are proud to be working closely with the USAF and Lockheed Martin to supply these advanced modems for a program of such national importance.”

“This award reinforces Kratos’ continued partnership with the U.S. military to design and manufacture critical specialized components that provide strategic and tactical situational awareness to the National Command Authority and the Warfighter,” said Phil Carrai, President of Kratos Technology and Training Solutions. “RT Logic’s industry-leading signal processing modems are already used by a majority of the U.S. Government’s space programs. The SEMM furthers this footprint in the areas of missile warning, missile defense and battlespace characterization.”

LAS VEGAS, NV–(Marketwire -01/08/12)- Acer unveiled the world’s thinnest Ultrabook with the Aspire S5, an ultra-slim device that measures only 15 mm at the maximal point. It weighs less than 1.35 kg (less than 3 lbs.) and is built with a 13.3-inch (34 cm) LCD. In addition, it features the unique Acer Green Instant On technology for fast boot and resume, and Acer Always Connect, which lets users manage their multimedia and data on all their devices at anytime, anywhere — even from sleep.

“The Ultrabook is much more than just a product segment,” said Jim Wong, president of Acer Inc. “It’s a new trend that will become the mainstream for mobile PCs, and customers will see the unique features gradually extended across Acer’s notebook family.”

Instantly on and always connected
Innovative Acer Green Instant On and Acer Always Connect technologies enable data upload and retrieval anytime, anywhere, and deliver power-saving features as well.

Acer Green Instant On provides instant-resume functionality (in 1.5 seconds) and ensures battery life that lasts several weeks.

Acer Always Connect gets users online faster than conventional connections for better productivity and infotainment enjoyment. With their Facebook, Twitter and Outlook email accounts open, users can see updates instantly upon resuming. Furthermore, Acer Always Connect can wake up the Aspire S5 from a remote device like a smartphone. Access to all documents, music, pictures and video files is fast and always available.

Ultra-fluid contours
Adorned with a delicately curved chassis in Onyx Black, the Aspire S5′s cover rim wraps around the system body like a protective shell. A magnesium-aluminum alloy cover and palmrest provide a slimmer and sturdier form, while the metallic brushed detail presents subtle elegance. The clean and ultra-fluid contours seen from all angles make the S5 a vision of beauty.

Magical I/O port panel
The Aspire S5 is Acer’s first Ultrabook to feature a smartly designed MagicFlip I/O port panel concealed just below the hinge. This design feature enhances the overall slenderness and streamlined form of the S5. When needed, a press of the MagicFlip key opens the panel to reveal a selection of I/O ports: HDMI®, USB 3.0 and 20 Gbps Thunderbolt.

Performance and eco-friendly features
The Aspire S5 features an Intel® Core™ processor, SSD storage for speed and increased shock resistance, professionally-tuned Dolby® Home Theater® v4, long battery life via the PowerSmart battery pack (with a 3X longer life cycle(1) than traditional batteries), and is equipped with a chiclet keyboard.

The Aspire S5 will start shipping in Q2 2012.

About Acer
Since its founding in 1976, Acer has achieved the goal of breaking the barriers between people and technology. Globally, Acer ranks No. 2 for notebook PCs.(2) A profitable and sustainable Channel Business Model is instrumental to the company’s continuing growth, while its multi-brand approach integrates Acer, Gateway, Packard Bell, and eMachines brands in worldwide markets. Acer designs environmentally friendly products and has established a green supply chain through collaboration with suppliers. Acer is proud to be a Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Movement, including supporting the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and London 2012 Olympic Games. The Acer Group employs 8,000 people worldwide. Revenues for 2010 reached US$19.9 billion.
(1) The battery will hold up to 80% of its original capacity after as many as 1,000 recharges. A full recharge comprises a complete charge-and-discharge cycle, and does not always occur each time the notebook is plugged in to a power source, as several partial charges can add up to a full recharge. Over three years of typical notebook use, the Acer PowerSmart long-life battery does not require replacement; conventional Li-ion battery packs must be replaced three times, assuming one charge per day, 300 charges a year.

This afternoon, CNET presented a CES session called “Next Big Thing,” focused on how technology ecosystems are coming to dictate the success or failure of products like phones, computers and TVs.

The point: Competitive gadget specs are critical to compete, but they’re just the price of admission. Even the fastest speeds, highest resolutions and most powerful processors don’t much matter if the products don’t plug into the world of apps, services and content that consumers have come to expect.

Apple kicked off the modern version of this high tech war, with the App Store for its assorted devices. But Amazon, Google and Microsoft have each diligently fostered ecosystems, helping to drive more products, uses and customers in a virtuous cycle.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt sat down with CNET’s Molly Wood to discuss the Mountain View search company’s vision for its ecosystems, principally the popular Android operating system for smart phones and tablets (and increasingly other gadgets).

He said when he looks at his handset, he doesn’t see a phone, but a network of supercomputers, content and smart algorithms all immediately accessible over the device.

“Computing devices that are not on a network are lonely,” he said.

Schmidt said that the many electronic products within our homes will increasingly be able to connect and communicate. That will allow us to control lighting, adjust our refrigerators or send texts over whichever screen suits us at the moment, be it a phone, tablet, TV or more. It will also allow the devices to automatically “adjust to accommodate” us.

He complimented Apple’s success in building an ecosystem, but said: “Microsoft is trapped in an architectural transition problem they may not get through.”

It seemed a clear reference to the software giant’s late moves into and limited success within the mobile space.

Schmidt was, let’s say, more generous in his evaluation of Google’s own ecosystem results.
He dismissed the common critique that Android is fragmenting as various manufactures use different versions of the open source software for different devices and tweak it to suit their needs. Instead, he said it was an example of “differentiation” of the interface, but insisted that the underlying engineering and experience remains the same.

He also argued that “Google TV is doing very well,” but only cited new or forthcoming manufacturing partners as evidence. Consumers buying the thing in real numbers would arguably be a better metric of success.

Schmidt said “we have a full offering now,” when it comes to content. He pointed out that Google’s music offering has brought three of the four major record labels into the fold, and that there are more than 300,000 apps for Android. Many observers, however, will still argue that the company pales in comparison to the content available through Apple devices.

Schmidt also highlighted the growth of Android, which is now the dominant smart phone operating system, noting there are an average of 700,000 activations per day.

“Android is on a billion unit plan,” he said.

We’ve heard plenty regarding this next tablet that we spotted over at the ASUS while wandering the halls at CES. This is the ASUS Eee Pad Memo 171 although we’ve seen a few names in the past. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of it but now it’s in the US we quickly grabbed some pictures. It’s currently set to hit Europe soon and we have all the details.

The ASUS MeMO 171 features a 7″ 1280 x 800 IPS display with great viewing angles and exceptionally great colors and brightness. Unlike it’s recently unveiled brother this model doesn’t have the quad-core, instead it will be offered with the Qualcomm 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM.

Again, this 7″ tablet isn’t as thin as the popular Transformer Prime but they’ve packed all that power into a smaller package so that is one thing to consider. The MeMO 171 has micro-USB, micro-HDMI and even micro-SD for extra storage. For those unfamiliar it also has a stylus hiding in the bezel below that doubles as a great handle while using in landscape mode. Around back is a 5 megapixel camera and they’ve tossed a 1.2 MP front for video calling.

ASUS has added an integrated MeMic bluetooth headset for superior audio quality and hands-free calling — yes hands-free calling. Currently only slated for a Europe debut this tablet features GSM radios and was actually rocking a T-Mobile SIM (as seen below). According to ASUS they have no immediate plans to bring this to the US but that could change at any moment. They also state it will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich “soon”. Enjoy the hands-on video and pictures below.

It’s raining Androids

At the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the pace at which companies are announcing Android-operated devices is simply astonishing, it’s definitely raining Androids. There were dozens of rumors leading up to the massive annual conference in Las Vegas, some of which have been substantiated below, others which were proven to be false.

Below is a roundup of over 30 Android devices that have been either launched or spotted on the tradeshow floor at CES:
